![]() ![]() Of the City of London’s 80,000 inhabitants it is estimated that 70,000 lost their homes. Only the outlying areas of Westminster, Whitehall and the surrounding slums remained. The whole medieval City of London inside the original Roman Wall was destroyed, including the original St Paul’s Cathedral and 87 other churches. Christopher was educated at home by his father and another local clergyman. His father was the local rector and he later became the Dean of Windsor, responsible for the Chapel at Windsor Palace. His family had some wealth through Christopher’s mother, who died when he was about 2 years old.
